A Quick Note on the Ghanaian Economy

Garth Myers of the University of Kansas jogged my memory about a peculiarity in the Ghanaian economy.  Ghana is one of the world's largest producers of cocoa.  The question Garth posed was, if we had ever had a Ghanaian chocolate bar.  That reminded me that when we were in Accra, Mosa wanted very much for us to try Ghanaian chocolate.  He went well out of his way trying to find Ghanaian chocolate and was not successful.  We could not find Ghanaian chocolate in Ghana.

Also, nearly all of the coffee is Nescafe.  They grow coffee in Ghana for export.  The coffee that they drink is imported Nescafe.  I should note that the 'they' here is mainly foreigners.  I never saw a Ghanaian drink coffee (or eat chocolate.)  The point is that the economy that has developed, in large part, has developed no industry.  What goods are produced for export are raw materials.  There is no substantial value added industry in Ghana.
